Re: It's the Big Business 4th Block 5/29/09

Chrysler has filed for bankruptcy. GM is most likely going to file for bankruptcy. Ford is alive, but the demand for their cars is not as great as it once was. And along comes a company like this

In one paragraph explain what you think will happen to the auto industry in America in the coming years. In your paragraph, explain who you think will run these companies and also describe what kinds of cars you think will be produced and why these cars will be produced.

Re: Block 4 April 3rd Legislation

Choose from one of the following sites to find legislation:
White House
Senate
House of Representatives

Look for current legislation, pick one bill, explain what it is and where it is in the legislative process. Make your explanation clear and concise and in one paragraph and post as a comment before the class period is over.

If you finish early, either make up past work for the virtual stock exchange or go to the virtual stock exchange to check how your stocks are doing.

Re: Obama and Afghanistan Block 4 March 27th 2009

Please read the following article

Please tell in your opinion if you think this is a good idea or not in at least one paragraph. You can also cite this article and this article

If you have time and check your stocks and decide to trade, please also mention in a separate paragraph what stocks you sold and bought and why. But don't do this until after you finish the first assignment as it is worth 100 points

Block 4 Stock Market Project 3/20/09 Update

Okay
For today, after watching the demo on how to use all of the tools of Virtual Stock Exchange, you will purchase your stocks, if you have not done so already. You will need to purchase a total of 4 different companies, the number of shares will depend on the price per share. You don't want to purchase more than $25,000 worth of any company. So if a share price is at $10.00, you will purchase a total of 2500 shares to make it at $25,000.

Now for what you will have to post here as a comment for a grade:
Please explain why you purchased your different stocks, three-four sentences per company. If you purchased a company's stock before the demo because it went up the most that day for that sector, than share that information. You will be graded on how well you are able to justify why you purchased the stock though.
This is very unpredictable, and there are many factors that can make the market go up and go down.

Block 4 Stock Market Project

President Obama said the other day that, "What you're now seeing is ... profit and earning ratios are starting to get to the point where buying stocks is a potentially good deal if you've got a long-term perspective on it. Businesses are starting to see opportunities for investment and potential hiring," he said. "We are going to start creating jobs again." Obama said he wasn't focused on "the day-to-day gyrations of the stock market, but the long-term ability for the United States and the entire world economy to regain its footing." he compared the Dow Jones Industrial Average to a daily tracking poll in politics. "You know, it bobs up and down day to day," he said. "And if you spend all your time worrying about that, then you're probably going to get the long-term strategy wrong."

So, what you will be doing specifically today are three things.
A. register for an account at Virtual Stock Exchange. Please remember your user name and password as nobody will remember it for you.

B. After you have registered, you will follow these directions: Use the information and directions below to join the game.

You will be informed weekly on where you should be in this project.

As I am the administrator, I will be following your progress. Good luck, I really mean this.

Transparency

On February 17, 2009, the day after President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law, the Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag sent a detailed memo to the heads of all departments and agencies receiving funds from the act, offering guidance for how to meet the President's high expectations for transparency and accountability.

In response, many have established their own Recovery Act web pages. Use this link to learn more about how the different agencies and departments are spending the funds allocated to them by the ARRA. But keep in mind, many more pages will come online -- with much more information -- in the weeks and months ahead, so check back often for updates.

You will be assigned one agency to research from the 25 agencies listed. You will need to write one paragraph with the following information:

Tell briefly what this agency does in your own words, (not something copied and pasted from the site)
Find within the agency website a link that has Agency plans and reports to ensure transparency. On a scale of 1 to 10, grade the site for transparency. (10 being the most transparent.) Describe in a couple of sentences why you gave that score. Please include the contact person and their phone number and e-mail address.
If time permits, you can call that contact person on your cell phone describing what you think should be done to make the site more transparent.

Creating a Mind Map out of your agenda

Now that you know what agenda item you chose, you will have to create a mind map out of it. Your mind map must contain the following:
A. Important aspects of the agenda, who it claims it will benefit, how it will benefit, how much it will cost.
B. House and senate bills in the past that are related to this agenda item, but that the agenda item will improve upon or directly against the agenda item. (Find one piece of legislation and explain it in detail.) You can start your research here.
C. Last but not least, who within the corporate world, or policy arena are behind this agenda, and why they are pushing it.

You will work on this today and two days next week.

Since you are working in groups of two, at the beginning, one person will need to learn how to use the mind map software, while the other person starts to research.
You will have to register for a basic at Mindomo

Next week, you will both need to work on research and putting it together on the mind map.
Here is a sample of the branches of government, which I am sure you will be assigned later.

When you are finished, you will post it as a link by commenting within this post.

Obama's Agenda

As a warm up for a civic activity, please do the following survey. If you need help with figuring out how far it is to get to school from your house, by car, public transit, or walking, consult Google maps. In the directions, put in your address and Kennedy's Address. (39999 Blacow Road, Fremont CA, 94538)

Please go to the White House site and read your assigned topic from the Obama Agenda page.
You have fifteen minutes to look over the list of agenda items, there are 24 total. With a partner, select your agenda item and post it in a response on this blog. Please explain in a paragraph why you chose that specific agenda item.

If you post before 15 minutes is up, you will not get that agenda item and it will be left to my discretion which agenda item you will research.

Make sure that before you comment, you create a google account, as you will need one to post a comment. You will need to go to this site to register. Please click get started, and make sure you use your first and last name as the user, otherwise you will not receive 20 points credit.
